Nicola Sturgeon responds after Celtic staffer’s head is split open by thrown bottle

Nicola Sturgeon has reacted to the events at Ibrox yesterday when broken glass thrown by theRangers support littered the Celtic goal-mouth at the start of the second half and that was after a Celtic staff member was hit in the head by a glass bottle thrown from the central area of the Main stand. This injury required urgent medical attention and several stitches were needed for the head wound that could have been much worse.

Celtic winger Jota was also targeted with bottles and coins thrown at his while he was preparing to take a corner kick, again at a different area of the ground an over at the other side Celtic players had to dodge bottles thrown at them after the final whistle as they celebrated with the brave 700 Celtic supporters, including Lub098 from The Celtic Star who reported back last night about the constant stream of missiles being thrown at the away section at Ibrox yesterday by a hateful and seeming out of control home support.

Now Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has had her say on what was a shameful day for the latest Ibrox club yesterday.

“This sort of behaviour is not acceptable, whether it happens at a football match or in the street. People throwing glass bottles is not acceptable, it’s mindless, thuggish behaviour and it has no place in any civilised society.

“But these are matters for the authorities, obviously for the football authorities and potentially for the Police and the criminal justice authorities. Football is something, regardless of what team you support, I’m not the world’s biggest football fan, as I think is well know – and not just because my team is Ayr Utd – but, people should be able to enjoy football, should be able to take their kids to and have a happy, joyful occasion. Behaviour like that whether its at an Old Firm (sic) match or any other football match and it should absolutely be seen as unacceptable.”

Meanwhile the arched Old Firm branding which the two teams walked through as they entered the field of play yesterday afternoon appears to have been put out with the rubbish at Ibrox today, as you can see for this image below…

Earlier today we told you about another incident that so far has gone unnoticed where a supporter attempted to run onto the field of player to get at the Celtic players celebrating Cameron Carter-Vickers’ goal.

The rangers fans cause trouble every where they go,the team do not deserve to be followed by animals, the fanbase should be banned from all away games both inside the stadiums and on the streets around glasgow. They always kick off even among themselfs, pure hatred.

Great result and super strong performance yesterday. Our attacking approach has brought us praise but we are still told we are weak at the back and suspect at set pieces. Odd that this is such an oft repeated view. Celtic have only lost 19 goals in 32 games – by far the best in the league – Man City (18) & Liverpool (20) in 30 games in the EPL is good for a kind of comparison – albeit standards are higher there. (Note – Bayern 29 in 28, Real Madrid 26 in 30).
We often get criticised by the so called expert brains trust on Sportscene/Sportsound etc on this perceived vulnerability at set pieces – but less said about the fact that it might actually be about the only way to beat our defence i.e. getting a free hit into our box – which in open play the outfield player’s hard work and tactical approach usually stops.
Rangers goal yesterday was a rare example of poor defending by the full back and lazy marking by a midfielder (Hatate). Our set piece defending was exemplary – unlike our opponents.
This is a very exciting team to watch – with a clear assertive philosophy and strong leadership. Defensively we have a settled back line, good defender options (Welsh, Julien, Ralston etc) and a very reassuring inspirational and experienced presence in goal.
Rarely in many years of watching Celtic – and football generally – have I seen such a huge change in a team’s approach, look and fortunes in such a short time as the result of a new manager/coach. That Ange has done it largely on his own – with the flawed support team he inherited – and not imported a huge gang of his own mates to hang around in tracksuits beside him earns huge respect. This man is a proper manager and, in my view, very Jock Stein like. By making the team such an attacking force and insisting on playing the ball out from the back might give us all palpitations sometimes but he has faith in his ideas, sticks to them and has sold them to the squad.
Happy days – long may they continue.

  3. As usual, Sturgeon calls out ‘football fans, no matter which team you support’ as she will never used the word ‘thugs’ and ‘Rangers fans’ in the same sentence. She’s had plenty of opportunity over the past couple f years and refuses to burn her boats with half the voters.

Sturgeon is as weak as water. Calm it for what it is. She’s not just a wee woman from down the street commenting it’s terrible. She’s supposed to be the leader of a country and has a full police force and other options at her disposal. To sit back and just say that it’s bad behaviour, is very much the same as condoning the behaviour. If a broken bottle had been thrown at a politician or police, they’d be locked up by now and the book thrown at them. Racist songs heard before kick off and all through the game. Broken glass bottles thrown behind the goals, at the corner and behind the dug out, so they can’t just say it was one idiot from one part of the stadium.

Let’s see you be a proper leader Nicola and enforce a home & away supporter ban until the end of the season and then you can talk to the police supposedly protecting players and decent supporters and why they failed. Too busy ring fencing 700 fans because they were donning green colours. You’d be all over it if it were a politician, police, coloured person, Islamic or Jewish, but would never cross your tiny mind because it’s the team of the establishment.

She’s simply a disgrace and her lack of action is the same as condoning it and every but as bad & guilty as the culprits.
