Ninety Minute Compper – He’s now played more football for Duisburg than Celtic

MARVIN COMPPER has completed a full ninety minutes of football for the first time since he was playing for RB Leipzig. Despite signing for Celtic in the January 2018 transfer window he failed to complete a full game for the Scottish Champions in 18 months in Scotland.

In fact he play only once for Celtic – in March 2018 in the Scottish Cup win against Morton at Celtic Park. Compper managed 81 minutes on his debut in the 3-0 win as Celtic continued on the road to Hampden to complete a double treble.

Compper dropped out of contention after that game and never re-appeared in a Celtic shirt either for the manager who paid RB Leipzig £1m for him or his successor Neil Lennon.

So it was something of a relief for everyone at Celtic when Neil Lennon off-loaded the high earning German this summer to join German third division side Duisburg.

Compper’s 90 minutes at the weekend for Duisburg in their 4-1 victory over Sonnenhof Grossaspach in the opening league fixture of the new season, means that Compper has played more football for Duisburg than he managed for Celtic.

Speaking to the media after his new side’s win, as reported by Scottish Sun, Compper was clearly delighted to be back in action.

“It was a nice feeling to be back playing and really, that’s exactly why I came to Duisburg.

“I suppose it felt a bit strange at first after all this time out, but it took no time at all to get back into it.

“I made it clear when I left Celtic my main aim as to play football and that’s why I came here. My body is still strong.

“We won 4-1 without ever really playing well to be honest and that’s a good thing. Now it’s just a case of trying to play as many games as I can at this stage of my career.”
