‘Old Firm’ Down Under Rumour – Is Celtic really going to play the Rangers at Olympic Stadium in Sydney?

When Grant Muir of Sydney FC Unofficial (SFCU) raised the issue of Celtic playing theRangers in Australia a few weeks ago, it’s fair to say he took a bit of stick on social media.

Now however that same reporter is seemingly rather confident he’s about to be proved right, as he has now stated the match will take place at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney and it will happen during the November international window later this year -and the news will be confirmed tomorrow.

“Hey, remember I tweeted about @celticFC v @RangersFC playing in the November international break at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney? And everybody laughed and said was talking crap and it would never happen? It’ll be confirmed tomorrow.”

And Aussie Journalist, Ray Gatt has also confirmed  he’s heard the same thing.

“Can confirm this is happening. Huge! Ange back in Australia and one of the biggest rivalries in world sport!”

For Australian based Celtic supporters such a tie – not sure you could dare call it a ‘friendly’ – would be big news, and it would no doubt be a money spinner for Celtic especially with the Ange Postecoglou connection in full flow. And I’d hate to rain on anyone’s parade when it comes to having a chance to see their team play in their own back yard, and at a reasonable hour, given the sacrifices and early hour alarm calls Aussie based Celtic fans have to endure to follow their team.

However..this news, should it prove to be correct, will not only make Celtic money and raise our profile still further in Australia, it will also fund theRangers’ and ensure the ‘Old Firm’ brand the Celtic board pretends to wish to have no part in remains alive and well.

It will further embolden those who sees us as two cheeks of the same backside and it will also mean theRangers coin in the profit and we as a club ensure we help them to do so.

This may well be big news in Australia, but from a Celtic perspective is this really something we need to do? Do we really have to involve theRangers and inject financial support into their coffers? Or could we cut them out entirely and play an Australian side while we’re out there instead of raising the profile of a rival who will be riding entirely on our coattails.

I’m sure it is all very exciting for our Aussie based supporters but is it necessary to accentuate a ‘connection’ with a club we’d much rather in no way be connected to, after all we get enough of it at home as it is.

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
