On This Day: Goals from the 20th Century including Chalmers and Burns

On This Day, Celtic have played a number of fixtures, so we have decided to split it into two. Thanks to @Lilze_7 on Twitter, we can take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Celtic’s goals on this day.

Here are the games from this day during the 20th century.

Firstly, we have the Scottish Cup semi-final versus Raith Rovers in 1963. The game was 1-1 until the 50th minute when Mackay’s penalties put the game beyond the Kirkcaldy side. This sparked a response from the Rovers before Chalmers and Brogan put the game beyond doubt.

The Celtic Wiki

“Celtic won the rehearsal for the 1974 SCF on a dry, bare pitch which made passing difficult.

The two goals were stunners, the first a great Murray shot from the edge of the box and the second when Hay nearly burst the net with a vicious shot. Billy McNeill completely overcame Dundee Utd’s star striker Andy Gray who Everton were seeking to buy at £150,000.”

Another Scottish Cup clash ‘On This Day’ back in 1985. Celtic avoided a shock by coming from behind and forcing a replay through Tommy Burns’ equaliser. One newspaper article on the Celtic Wiki said ‘the paying public got little or no value for their hard earned cash.’
