On This Day in 2022, Celtic beat Dundee United 1-0 to gain ground on Rangers in the race for the Premiership title. Ange Postecoglou’s side were depleted by injuries (and a red card) but they proved that their mentality to keep going until the very end with a late Liel Abada winner sending Paradise into a frenzy.
Shortly before the Celtic team emerged for their warmup, the celebrations echoed around the stadium with Matthew Wright’s late equaliser in Dingwall meaning Rangers would drop points ahead of the impending midweek clash. The draw meant that Rangers would go five points ahead, which meant that should Celtic win, they would move within two points of the leaders – with a chance to go top with a win during the week.
Celtic passed up a few opportunities in the first half to score with poor finishing and inspired goalkeeping making sure that the score remained level at the interval. Jota was Celtic’s best attacking outlet after he was introduced with Josip Juranovic at half-time. The pair combined as the game entered its final seconds with our Portuguese winger putting a cross into the box for Abada to control and finish. It was an incredible end to a frustrating afternoon and it sets up the game against Rangers. The result would set up the memorable Glasgow Derby win a few days later.
