On This Day: Neil Lennon’s Celtic take massive step towards 9IAR

On This Day in 2020, Celtic took a massive step towards winning nine-in-a-row with a win over Hearts. Neil Lennon’s side were in blistering form as they put five goals beyond the visitors from across the M8 on a pivotal night in the title race as Rangers lost at Rugby Park.

Lennon’s team were in an utterly unforgiving mood against the Tynecastle side, who simply couldn’t cope with the intensity of the 3-5-2 formation adopted by the Irishman in the second half of that season.

Olivier Ntcham scored the opener as Odsonne Edouard’s shot was parried by the goalkeeper. The attacking was relentless from Celtic after the break as Christopher Jullien made it 2-0 and eight minutes later Callum McGregor made it 3-0. Ryan Christie made it 4-0 before Jozo Simunovic made it 5-0. The scenes at the end of the game were terrific as news filtered through that Steven Gerrard’s Rangers were beaten at Kilmarnock.

Celtic: Forster; Ajer, Simunovic, Jullien; Forrest, Brown, Ntcham, McGregor, Taylor; Griffiths, Edouard.

Subs: Bain, Elyounoussi, Bauer, Hayes, Christie, Rogic, Bayo.

It was a brilliant Celtic team that Lennon assembled and it was a shame that the COVID-19 pandemic stopped the club.
