On This Day: Paddy Roberts shines as Celtic win 5IAR

On This Day in 2016, Celtic sealed 5-in-a-row with a victory over Aberdeen at Celtic Park thanks to an awesome display from Paddy Roberts.

CELTIC 3 ABERDEEN 2 – 2016

Celtic arrived at Parkhead knowing a win would seal five-in-a-row despite the 3 points at Tynecastle the week before meaning it was all but secured due to the huge goal difference amassed over McInnes’ side. Celtic were 9 points clear with three games to play and were 36 goals ahead of the Pittodrie side.

Ronny Deila’s side started brightly and two special finishes from Paddy Roberts had the Scottish Champions on the verge of title celebrations at half time. Shortly after the break, stand-in skipper Mikael Lustig made it 3-0 with an emphatic finish from the right-back.

The inconsistency that had plagued the side, which resulted in Ronny Deila’s decision to leave at the conclusion of the campaign, reared its head in the second half. McGinn scored for Aberdeen before a Considine header set up a nervy finish. Although Deila’s Celtic held firm and delivered the fifth consecutive league title.

Deila would depart shortly afterwards, moving on to be replaced by Brendan Rodgers. The Norwegian manager won three trophies in his time at the club and is remembered fondly for the part he played in transitioning between Neil Lennon and Rodgers, who then took the club to another level.
