On This Day Part 2: Celtic Goals from the 21st Century

THERE is not a lot of football being played right now across the world as Coronavirus takes hold – except Belarus, where vodka and saunas are meant to keep the virus at bay. However, thanks to @Lilze85 on Twitter, we can take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Celtic’s goals on this day.

Here are the games from this day during the 21st century.

Celtic dispatched Dunfermline by five goals on this day back in 2002. Hartson scored two, Lambert, Smith and Sylla got the others as the newly-crowned Champions put on a show at Celtic Park. The result meant that Dunfermline’s dream for a UEFA Cup place was over. Shame.

Henrik Larsson gave Celtic the lead in this clash with Killie back in 2003. The King of kings was set up by the selfless John Hartson to open the scoring for Martin O’Neill’s side. Petrov got the second in a game that Celtic should’ve scored more as it took them within eight points of Rangers, who had played two more games.

In 2005, Celtic travelled to the Almondvale Stadium to play Livingston. A hat-trick from John Hartson and a goal from Stan Varga produced a comprehensive victory for Celtic.

Back in 2008, Celtic travelled to Fir Park knowing they needed to win at all costs as the Steelmen had turned them over at Parkhead a week before. Celtic got lucky when Stephen McManus’ header found the net despite appearing to clip his arm before evading 3 defenders on the line. The ‘Well hit back through Ross McCormack after a devastating counterattack. Scott McDonald and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink made it 3-1 before half time before Jan made it 4-1 in the 56th min. The win would take Celtic within four points of Rangers.

During Neil Lennon’s interim tenure back in 2010, Motherwell came calling to Celtic Park. A brace from Josh Thompson – remember him – sealed the victory for Lennon’s team after Mark Reynolds gave the Steelmen the lead in the second half.
