On This Day: The first time 8-in-a-row was won

ON SATURDAY 28 APRIL 1973 Celtic won the Scottish League Championship for the eighth year in a row by beating Hibs 3-0 at Easter Road before a packed crowd of 45,453, the vast majority of them being Celtic supporters.

Rangers have fought hard all season and Celtic have a difficult last day, but they rose magnificently to the occasion with a goal from Dixie Deans in the first half, then Kenny Dalglish and Dixie Deans again in the second half.

It was a great triumph for Jock Stein after the bad mid-winter that the team suffered, and the team was now virtually unrecognisable from the team that won the first championship in the sequence back in 1966.

Only Billy McNeill, Bobby Murdoch and Jimmy Johnstone remained from the Celtic league winning side from 1966.

Some of the new players weren’t that bad though…

Here are the highlights…

Celtic won 8-in-a-row again in 2019 with a win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie 46 years.
