On This Day: The last ever Old Firm, Celtic 3 Rangers 0

On this day marks the final Old Firm to take place back in 2012. The administrators were in at Ibrox and Ally McCoist’s team headed to Paradise knowing that the Scottish Champions were ready to rub it in.

2012 – CELTIC 3 RANGERS 0

Neil Lennon watched from the stands as Celtic recorded an emphatic victory over their Glasgow rivals. Rangers kept the ball and started ‘damage limitation’ from kick off but Celtic pushed as the incredible atmosphere spurred them on.

An unmarked Charlie Mulgrew opened the scoring with a superb diving header from a corner and those in the Lisbon Lions corner may have feared the worse.

Celtic made it 2-0 before half time after Gary Hooper squared it to Kris Commons, who beat two men before dinking the ball over Allan McGregor and celebrating in front of the Rangers supporters.

If Rangers had tried to keep the ball before, they tried even harder with Celtic getting roared on to increase their 2-0 advantage. They had a handful of half chances but it wasn’t their day. That was still to come…

Gary Hooper smashed an emphatic shot into the roof of the net after Commons robbed the ball from a hapless Rangers midfielder before Samaras set the Englishman through on goal. 3-0.

Celtic pushed and fashioned more chances but McGregor stood firm, they were beaten and demoralised but managed to cling on to a 3-0 grubbing, which could have been more in reality.

Full time offered light relief for Rangers but their embarrassment continued as the PA blasted out ‘When will I see you again’ as the Celtic supporters lapped up the celebrations on the pitch.
