“Once upon a time, a daft man had a daft idea,” BRTH

“Once upon a time, a daft man had a daft idea,” Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan (BRTH) noted on the bsky.app at the weekend…

DAFT incidentally must stand for DEFINITELY A FANTASTIC TRIP. Indeed we are talking the trip of a lifetime for 19 chartered plane loads of Celtic supporters, all seats taken and all coming home with memories that would last a lifetime.

I know BRTH and I was at his dad’s funeral. They played Hail Glorious St Patrick at the funeral mass and that seemed appropriate.

So what was this ‘daft idea’ that perhaps has more mad than daft but enriched the lives of all those who got on board. There’s an article in The Irish Voice that explains.

“I believe everyone has a story and luckily for me many find their way to me in the simplest of forms,” Ms Sexton states. “This one’s no different. So, I know a guy, who knows a guy whose dad was the famous Jim McGinley from Glenswilly in County Donegal. Jim was the catalyst behind so many Celtic fans getting to Lisbon to witness history being made when they won the European Cup on May 25, 1967 at the Estadio Nacional.”…

What follows is the best wee Celtic story that you will read on the internet today.

We’ll leave you in peace to enjoy the article on The Irish Voice but before we do a mention for the last paragraph which I didn’t know – although I have heard BRTH tell this story many, many times…

“Hail Hail the Celts are here!” were the words heard over the tannoy system by Celtic fans when they arrived back to Glasgow Airport following their Lisbon victory. The announcer was Kathleen McGinley, Jim’s wife who welcomed them home. I’d have paid good money to be there and hear that announcement I can tell you.

That’s just brilliant!  Read the full article below, you’d be daft not to…

  1. My first trip overseas was to Lisbon in 1967 with Holiday Enterprises. Over the following years I travelled to several other away games in Europe with them. Different days with no cheap airlines. Most of the time the Holiday Enterprises flight was the only one bringing Celtic Supporters to the game. Got to know some great Celtic fans on those trips. Remember Mrs McGinley well. Always helpful. I booked a last minute trip to Basle once. I was worried about getting on the plane. She said ” Don’t worry- even if we have to strap you to the wing we’ll get you there!”. Don’t worry- I got a seat!
