Opinion: Celtic could look to former favourite in the summer as rebuild begins

Former Celtic Player of the Year Stefan Johansen is available for transfer after Fulham boss Scott Parker said it was a possibility he would leave the Premier League side. However, it may be worth a moment to consider whether Celtic should move for the Norwegian as they prepare for a squad overhaul in the summer. Championship side QPR have been linked with a short term move and speaking to West London Sport, Parker said it was a possibility that the midfielder would leave the club.

“It seems that there is some talk there. I have been with the team for the last two days preparing for this game so I am not really up to speed, but it seems that is a possibility to happen.”

Johnasen was a top pro and excelled in the midfield under his compatriot Ronny Deila. However, with Brendan Rodgers arriving at the club, Johansen finally got his move to England and at 30 he still has a lot of football left in his legs.

He will be desperate to be playing and competing with a place in the World Cup in 2022 at stake with the Norwegian side. A move to Celtic could be favourable for both parties given the fact that Johansen knows the club and can likely act as a stopgap if there is a large turnover of players in the summer. Even on an eighteen month deal, Johansen wouldn’t require any significant fee as Fulham look to move him on.

With players like Ryan Christie, Olivier Ntcham and possibly Callum McGregor as well as Scott Brown, all likely to move on in the summer. There could be a total lack of experience within the midfield ranks at the club. A move for someone like Johansen, who is proven at a certain level and can try and help the club build on from what has been a period of incredible success.
