Opinion: Celtic should move for £1m ace now as selling club are obviously desperate for cash

It’s clear that some clubs are going to struggle so much more than others right now in a financial sense, so there could be some smart moves to be made in the transfer market.

It’s become apparent that a lot of clubs have left themselves no wiggle room financially if things went wrong, and Hearts are really starting to feel the pinch now.

Sky Sports reported that the Edinburgh club were trying to force a 50% pay cut onto their players right now so it’s clear that they are having some cash-flow issues, so selling players could be the answer.

Opinions will be split over signing players just now – some will applaud the bigger clubs for giving some money to the smaller sides, while some will just see it as taking advantage of a bad situation.

Regardless of that, HITC have reported that Celtic face a lot of Premier League competition in their efforts to sign Aaron Hickey, so it could make sense just to pay the £1m now and secure him for next season.

He fits that profile of a young talented player that Celtic have signed lately, plus he’s got plenty of Premiership experience so he could be relied upon straight away if it came to it.

Ideally he would be allowed to develop and possibly go out on loan before pushing for a major role at Celtic, but there’s a lot to like about his game.

He’s completely dogged defensively – sometimes to a fault as he can get drawn in too much, but he’s also confident on the ball, energetic and can get up and down both flanks with ease.

If we look at Celtic’s full back situation then he’s a better third choice than Tony Ralston who’s been poor for St Johnstone this season, and Greg Taylor hasn’t really got going on the other side either.

It’s understandable that the board might be reluctant to sanction any major outgoings at this point with little money coming in, but this would make a lot of sense.
