Opinion: Signing Ben Davies should be on Ange’s terms and no-one else’s

Celtic are reportedly considering a move to bring Liverpool’s Ben Davies in on a season-long loan. The former Preston North End defender looked set to sign a pre-contract with Celtic in January only for Liverpool to nip in and pay £2m for the 25-year-old.

Since then, Davies has barely registered on the radar with Liverpool, being confined to just a handful of appearances from the bench since joining Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The player cannot be criticized for this, he was joining a local team, then Premier League Champions, and taking a pay hike. Celtic didn’t get the deal done, allowing Liverpool to steal him away in a dramatic fashion but they have the opportunity to rectify it this summer as Davies looks set for the Anfield exit.

Celtic have been linked by the Daily Mail with a move for Davies but this should only be sanctioned if Ange is happy with the player. There can be no repeat of last year where players were signed as compromises for missed targets.
