Opinion: The Personnel Now Suits A 3-5-2

After our poor performances leading into the Glasgow derby, I felt it was time to move away from our 3-5-2 shape. However, there were a few factors involved in that thought.

Firstly, it was never a 3-5-2, it was a 3-6-1 as Lennon only played one striker, rather than two. We were told Griffiths wasn’t fit, Edouard had covid and Ajeti was injured so two up front wasn’t on the table.

The next problem was at left wing back, where Greg Taylor was being deployed. Taylor is an out and out left back, with a defensive mindset. He didn’t suit the role.

The problem was never the shape itself, but the personnel.

Now we have Diego Laxalt, who is a perfect fit for the left wing back role. We have Tom Rogic fit and he can be utilised in the centre of midfield with Christie, whilst McGregor sits behind. Griffiths and Edouard linked up well on Saturday and have had some goals under their belt now.

As a result, I think the 3-5-2 suits the team now and allows us to get Rogic, Christie, Griffiths and Edouard into the team in their best positions. Considering our defence is shambolic, we may be better getting the most of our attack, particularly as we seem to struggle to break teams down when they sit deep.

Could there now be an argument for the following line up?
