OTD – Celtic 1 Rangers 1 and a ‘Perfectly good goal disallowed for no reason’

On This Day – 3rd January, Celtic hosted Rangers under Tony Mowbray as the Englishman attempted to gain some ground on the Ibrox club. Thanks to LilZe85 on Twitter, we are able to get the highlights of the goal(s) in that game.

In what was a one-sided affair, Celtic battered Rangers as Walter Smith’s anti-football was in full flow and Mowbray thought that his side had taken the lead after 18 minutes when Fortune headed in after beating McGregor in the air. However, the Celtic Park celebrations were cut short as Steve Conroy blew his whistle for a foul against the striker.

There was further controversy as the referee failed to send off Kyle Lafferty for a two-footed lunge on Hinkel, which could have severely injured the German.

Celtic squandered chance after chance as they pushed Rangers further back but got their breakthrough when the tricky McGeady found Scott McDonald who nodded in after 78 mins.

Rangers scored minutes later with their first shot on target of the game.

Walter Smith couldn’t believe his luck after the game as he celebrated retaining a 7 point lead.

“We are delighted to have got a point from a game we should not have. We were not with the pace of the game at all.”

Meanwhile Tony Mowbray’s post-match comments epitomised everything that went wrong in his ill-fated reign at Celtic – he was too passive when discussing the refereeing performance and as a nice guy, was destined to be bullied as he lacked the killer touch.
