Peter Lawwell confirmed as Vice Chairman in major European move

Celtic Chairman Peter Lawwell has been appointed as Vice Chairman of the European Club Association (ECA). The former Celtic Chief Executive has been involved with the ECA since 2014 and has been looking to redesign the European stage to benefit clubs like Celtic.

Speaking about his new role, Lawwell told the Celtic website that it was an honour and thanked PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi and the rest of the board for voting him into a prestigious position.

“It is an honour to be appointed into these new positions.

“It is crucial that the Club has a voice at the top of the game, and as we continually seek to strengthen and develop European football as a whole, I will also continue to do all I can to work in the best interests of both Celtic and Scottish football.

“I would like to thank ECA Chairman, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, and fellow Board members for giving me this opportunity.”

Lawwell’s role in the ECA might have played a part in the UEFA Champions League deciding to embark on a new format that will see more even ties to increase the entertainment value and reduce the amount of David v Goliath clashes.

Lawwell also said that he is committed to representing Celtic and Scottish football on a European stage, which is a positive update for other clubs in the league that are looking to compete in Europe.

Celtic fans that believe that Lawwell is exerting control over the football club will be relieved to learn that the ECA and UEFA Competitions Board roles are particularly taxing and Lawwell will likely spend a great deal of time occupied by them.
