Peter Martin claims only Joe Hart would make the 2003 Celtic team

Since the chance at breaking records is on the horizon again, inevitably the chat always turns to comparing teams from the past and present. It’s something that has always been a factor in Scottish football and maybe even football more generally, particularly in journalism circles and cliques. It makes for controversy and headline making and always gets the room chatting away.

Henrik Larsson is mobbed by his Celtic team mates after netting the opening goal.

Some can be ridiculous and completely nonsensical – Kris Boyd and Henrik Larsson anyone? However, some can generate genuine debate as to whether or not the old or the new is top dog and whether or not certain players would get into either team. This latest one is rather interesting and it comes from PLZ Soccer host, Peter Martin.

The former Sky Sports and Clyde1 man has been using his platform to discuss who would get into the 2003 Seville team under Martin O’Neill from the current Ange Postecoglou side. Martin intimated that only Joe Hart would make the cut and replace Rab Douglas, which I tend to agree with by the way. However, would any others get into that great Celtic side?

It’s given me food for thought…

I think Callum McGregor does get into that Martin O’Neill side ahead of Lennon. I also think Hatate and Petrov could be interchangeable. I certainly wouldn’t say that Stan – as much as I loved him and still do – is a far better player than Reo Hatate. Cameron Carter-Vickers would also have to be considered for a place in the side, in my opinion. But again, O’Neill tended to like big, strong, physical type players – so would he really consider any of the current team?

What’s your thoughts? Does anyone else apart from Joe Hart get in the 2003 Martin O’Neill side for Celtic?

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.

  1. Are we sure Peter Martin knows the names of Celtic players as he seems to have a problem with his own name.!! He changed his name from McQuiere to Martin to get a job in ” the press”.!! The soup kitchen is open turncoat!!

    • That says more about the bastards he’s working for than it does about him mate. Fuckin scumbags

  2. This debate can’t be taken seriously. I mean as much as I loved Martin and that team of 2003, he played Lennon along with Lambert and Petrov in the middle of the park and then big Hartson up top. These were great players but the first name on that team sheet alongside Henrik Larsson should have been Lubomir Moravcik all day long. I think Lubo retired at the end of the 2002 season but he was totally underused. Especially in Europe. If we managed to convince him to stay one more season and only use him in the big games, I’m convinced he would won us the UEFA Cup in 2003.

  3. Carter vickers over laursen but he came on as a sub i think when bobo was sent off but definitely hart over big rab .i genuinely believe if we would have had a goalie the same standard as outfield players in o’Neills era we would have won a lot more than we did
