Photo Of The Day: Bertie Auld The Hero Against Fiorentina

Today’s photo of the day is all about the late great Bertie Auld.

Berite was one of the most loved Celtic men of all time, but beyond his patter, kind heart and charisma, he could play football incredibly well.

In the first leg of the 1970 European Cup quarter final, Auld was the hero as he set Celtic on their way to an amazing 3-0 victory. The fact that Bertie only found out he was playing half an hour before kick off, simply adds to the mystique of the story.

Incredibly, Jock Stein had travelled to Glasgow with the Fiorentina team ahead of the match, as he had been scouting them in Italy during a match against Torino.

Another interesting point about Stein was that he could be seen walking the perimeter of the pitch to bark instructions at his players – this being a time when there was no such thing as a technical area!
