Photo Of The Day: Billy Connolly Referees Celtic v Manchester United Wearing A Rangers Shirt

Today’s photo of the day, takes you back to May 1976, when Billy Connolly was invited to referee Bobby Lennox and Jimmy Johnstone’s joint Testimonial against Manchester United. The Big Yin was surprised to see that a Rangers jersey, hat and tartan scarf awaited him in the dressing room. Nevertheless, he obliged and led the teams out to a tirade of abuse and booing from the Jungle – all in jovial fashion of course.

On the field, Celtic battered Man Utd 4-0. The Reds were still reeling from their FA Cup Final defeat to Southampton a few days earlier.

In the footage above, you can see the Big Yin strolling around in his Rangers shirt, before collapsing to the ground and being placed on the stretcher at 1mins 10secs.

The match also featured two ex-Celts. Firstly, Davie Hay guested for the Hoops to aid in his recovery as a Chelsea player. Meanwhile, Tommy Docherty managed the visitors.

The focus of our feature is the below image – Billy alongside Jinky and Dalglish ahead of kick off.
