Photo Of The Day: Celebrations As Celtic Eliminate Kazakhstan Opposition

Today’s photo of the day rewinds the clock by over a decade, while linking to action this week. Indeed, our chosen image dates back to the summer of 2013, when Celtic advanced to the Champions League group stage at the expense of opposition from Kazakhstan, by the skin of their teeth.

The Hoops had been paired with Shakhter Karagandy and succumbed to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat in the first league, away from home. The return match would prove eventful at Paradise, when a long range strike from Kris Commons gave Celtic the lead on half time, then Samaras made it 2-0.

There was a huge scare when the Kazakhstan outfit hit the bar in the second half, but things finally got settled with an outpouring of joy in the final minute of the game, when Stokes wiggled his way through the box before cutting back to James Forrest. The Scottish winger crashed his shot in off the crossbar to give Celtic a famous 3-0 victory (3-2 on aggregate).

Cue bedlam as the fans and management piled into a bundle in front of the Jock Stein Stand.

Hopefully things are smoother when Celtic face Kazakhstan based opposition again tomorrow!
