Photo Of The Day: Celtic Fans In Benfica 2006

Today’s photo of the day gives fans a taste of the European football that is to come this year, by rewinding 16 years to the Champions League clash against Benfica.

20,000 Celtic supporters made the trip to Lisbon, creating a tremendous atmosphere in the city square and continuing to sing throughout a disappointing 3-0 defeat.

The occasion was poignant as it was during the season of the 40th anniversary of Lisbon. Many fans headed to the Estadio Nacional before the game, where they were joined by the Lisbon Lions onto the pitch. The Lions also appeared on the park at the Estadio da Luz during the half time break that evening.
