Photo of the Day: Celtic’s Duncan MacKay Clears At Hampden (1963)

Today’s photo of the day comes from the 1963 Scottish Cup Final.

129,527 people packed into Hampden Park for the game between Celtic and Rangers. A swirling wind and pouring rain battered the players, which made for a disappointing spectacle.

Unsurprisingly, the match ended in a draw (1-1), and goals came from Brand and Murdoch, in the 43rd and 45th minute respectively.

Despite the caption, the below image shows Duncan ‘Dunky’ MacKay clearing the ball out for a throw in, under pressure from Rangers’ Davie Wilson.

The replay was set for 15 May and, unfortunately, the Celts were trounced 3-0 on that occasion.
