Photo Of The Day: Danny McGrain Holds Aloft The Scottish Cup

Today’s photo of the day brings you an image of Danny McGrain holding a loft the Scottish Cup trophy, following Celtic’s 2-1 victory over Dundee United in May 1985.

The occasion was historic for so many reasons. It was the 100th Scottish Cup final and the last such final not to be an all ticket affair, after the SFA received huge criticism for allowing the dangerous overcrowding to take place at the Celtic end. In Celtic terms, the final was one for the history books because it was Davie Hay’s first triumph as Manager, the McStay’s became a pair of only a few brothers to ever lift the cup in the same team, and Davie Provan became only the fifth person to score direct from a free kick in a Scottish Cup final – the first do so for almost 40 years.

Provan’s goal was the equaliser for the Bhoys, before Frank McGarvey scored an incredible diving header to win the game with six minutes to go.

  1. It’s not just that I love our Danny, but thanks as any article with the great full back will catch my attention, but also that you have some great articles and tend towards the quality of them than just sticking up anything for clicks, thanks again for that picture of our great Captain McGrain.

  2. It rained the whole day, there was a crush in the Celtic end and the north enclosure, and for a long spell in that 2nd half it looked like we were going to lose another cup final, having lost 2 the previous season. But it all came good in the end. Great day and great pic of the main man with the cup.
