Today’s photo of the day comes from Tannadice on 2 October 1982.
Celtic took a two goal lead through Paul McStay and Roy Aitken, but late goals from Davie Dodds and Ralph Milne earned Dundee United a 2-2 draw.
Over 20,000 people packed into the stadium that day. Tannadice was bursting at the seams with a massive travelling Celtic support in tow. The Celtic end was so full that the gates were locked and those left outside walked over the road to Dens Park, where they watched a Dundee v Rangers reserve match!
The Celtic end was rocking to the sound of “When it’s spring again we’ll sing again 2-1 in Amsterdam” after the Hoops’ famous 2-1 win over Ajax three days earlier. Similarly, Dundee United fans were in a great mood after their European win over PSV Eindhoven.
This really was a golden time for Scottish football as the team line ups suggest:
Dundee United – McAlpine Stark Malpas Gough Hegarty Narey Bannon (Holt) (Britton) Milne Kirkwood Sturrock Dodds
Celtic – Bonner McGrain Reid Aitken McAdam Sinclair Provan McStay McGarvey (McCluskey) MacLeod Nicholas
The result put Celtic two points clear at the top, with Dundee United and Rangers level, two points behind.
Enjoy the image/footage below and look at that crowd in the background – great days!
