Photo Of The Day: Paddy Bonner And The Tremendous Celtic Support

Today’s photo of the day is an image without contemporary connection. Instead, it has been chosen purely for what is depicted in its own right, and that is the iconic Paddy Bonner with the tremendous Celtic support in the background.

The picture was taken during the 1984 Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen. It is believed that the scene captured was towards the end of normal time, minutes after Paul McStay had scored a late equaliser. Little did the faithful know that Mark McGhee would spoil their afternoon with a winning goal in extra time.

Nevertheless, it’s a cracking photograph to look back on.

  1. The old Celtic end at hampden was a brilliant place to watch games, win, lose or draw we were all huddled together lots of times with more tims in it as probably was allowed but considering we never had a roof we gave the team incredible backing. My own favourite experience there was centenary cup final although the 85 Frank mcgarvey game wasn’t too far behind

  2. It was incredible Liam but everything about that season was just special. The team was full of Celtic fans big Billy was back where he belonged and the cup final being down 1-0 for so long but we knew that it would come good and when macca got the winner it was just one big huddle on the terraces.
