Photo Of The Day: The Celtic End At Hampden Park (1975 Scottish Cup Final)

Today’s photo of the day maintains the positivity surrounding Celtic by revisiting joyous scenes at the 1975 Scottish Cup Final when Celtic beat Airdrieonians 3-1 at Hampden Park.

Two goals from Paul Wilson and a penalty from Pat McCluskey were enough to get the job done and cancel out McCann’s strike for the underdogs, sending most of the 75,000 strong crowd delirious.

The Celtic support were at their colourful best with scarves above heads, flags waving and bedlam ensuing all around. Meanwhile, on the park Billy McNeill was held aloft as a hero.

Wonderful memories!

Just to be accurate, it was Pat McCluskey who scored the penalty, George McCluskey became a Celtic player a few years later

  2. It was a great day for Billy McNeill obviously but the real star of the show was Paul Wilson whose mother had died a few days before, and who had been the victim of some appalling racial abuse – even from Celtic fans! – earlier in the season. Two great goals, Paul! RIP
It was a sad day as well, though, for we had already lost the Scottish League and it had been abundantly clear for some time that we had passed from a Golden Age of Celtic to a Silver one. The feelings of the supporters were not unlike the feelings of 2021, but at least in 1975 we has the Scottish Cup to cheer us up!
