Today’s photo of the day is something of a random rewind to 5 June 1976. That was the date that The Who rocked Celtic Park in front of 23,000 people.
The band headlined an all day concert, which was reported to have passed off peacefully. However, there were 40 arrests. 33 were for drug offences, 4 for breach of the peace and 3 for what police described as ‘miscellaneous offences’.

Other bands included a Glasgow based group called the Alex Harvey Band, American groups Little Feat and the Outlaws, and lesser known British bands like the Streetwalkers.
Music began at noon and The Who were still performing at 11pm, as the pitch was covered with people, while the terraces were scarcely filled. Denim jackets and jeans were the order of the day and punters enjoyed games of football and frisbee, with banners showing support for Celtic and hailing the likes of Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.
Tickets were priced at £4, which is equal to £27 today.
“a Glasgow based group called the Alex Harvey Band”
Are you for real?
A Glasgow based band called Alex Harvey Band! Man you have to do some research. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band are one of the biggest and most influential bands to come out of Glasgow, and by all accounts blew the Who off the stage that day. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there to witness it, which is still one of my biggest regrets.
