In this snippet of Ronny Deila speaking to Graham Spiers on the journalist’s Press Box podcast sums up perfectly the reasons why he decided to leave Celtic – it’s as straight talking as you can expect to get from a manager reflecting on his own failures but also pointing to other aspects that caused the situation in the first place.
Spiers states: “I had a 45-minute conversation with Ronny Deila about coming to Celtic, taking on the challenge, being robbed of a treble by a diabolical refereeing decision, but ultimately failing to make progress.”
Maybe one factor that is missing is the very fact that Ronny was given the job only because there was no real opposition in the league at the time he was in charge so Celtic could afford the luxury of appointing a left-field, up and coming manager who perhaps lacked the experience for the job under normal conditions.

And Deila points to his own inexperience as a factor in his own analysis. With Ronny there is no bitterness, no entrenched positioning, no real blame game – and maybe Neil Lennon could benefit from listening to the Norwegian’s approach to looking back on his own time as Celtic manager.
No-one asked Lennon to leave first time around – he wanted a crack at England after feeling he had achieved something notable in that victory over Barcelona. That didn’t work out but as already stated that was down to his own decision to leave Celtic opening the door for Deila.
Ronny is also right in pointing out that the ‘Honest Mistake’ in that Scottish Cup semi-final with Inverness Caley Thistle robbed him of his Treble.

Incidentally Ronny remained on good terms with the club and gave Brendan Rodgers a detailed debrief on the squad and the events that took place that caused him problems and one or two never kicked a ball for the club again. Ronny had his revenge.
