Pundit suggests Ange could sign a ready-made captain, leaving McGregor out

To the majority of Celtic fans, it seemed like there was already a perfect, ready-made replacement on the Celtic conveyor belt to replace Scott Brown; yet, despite fans believing that Callum McGregor would be installed as captain, former Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has suggested otherwise.

He might be looking at bringing someone in with the perfect attributes who he thinks can be a good captain for Celtic.

Kenny, who spent the majority of his career at Sheffield United, believes that despite McGregor’s brilliant leadership qualities – which he had shown time and time again last season when Broony was absent – Ange Postecoglou may opt for a ready-made replacement; someone who has been around the captaincy block before, to perhaps steady the ship.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kenny said: “It depends who he’s got his eye on bringing in. You never know, he might sign someone who he wants to bring in as captain. I’ve been in squads where the captaincy wasn’t decided until the last week before the season started, so I have seen it left late.”

“It wouldn’t be a massive issue for me as a player as long as it’s sorted before the season gets underway. But he might be looking at bringing someone in with the perfect attributes who he thinks can be a good captain for Celtic.”

Having never experienced McGregor in a personal environment – be it the training ground or on the pitch – it is a farfetched comment from Kenny, who having retired over three years ago, will likely be out of the loop with Scottish football having never played anywhere but England during his career as a goalkeeper.

A decision on the captaincy vacancy will possibly be made in pre-season training, with Ange taking the players for the first time this week at a training camp in Wales.
