Celtic have reportedly placed a £8m transfer fee on Alexandro Bernabei as the Argentine defender continues to impress on loan…

Report claims Celtic looking for an £8m transfer fee

Bernabei joined Internacional on a loan deal back in March as the left-back looked to get more regular first team football. The 24-year-old has impressed in his eighteen performances, scoring three times and assisting on three occasions. A Glasgow World report claims that Celtic want £8m for the player as they look to net a healthy profit on the mulleted fullback.

Cusp of a call-up to the Argentina squad

Signed by Ange Postecoglou to offer competition for Greg Taylor, Bernabei failed to really get a run of games as Taylor took his game to another level. The Scottish Internationalist was so consistent that across one and a half seasons, Bernabei was limited to just 28 appearances, scoring once and assisting on three occassions. Most of these displays were from the bench but there were flashes of brilliance that convinced many that there was a talented player there.

Unfortunately for Celtic, Bernabei’s indiscretions off the pitch have been well documented and the club may somewhat struggle to get a hefty fee like £8m for the player. It would be a massive coup if they did, but given the player is on the cusp of a call-up to the Argentina squad. Celtic could benefit from the added exposure by selling the player on.

It remains to be seen whether there will be any movement on the Bernabei front but given Celtic moved to sign Alex Valle in the summer from Barcelona, it was clear that Celtic were not going to recall Bernabei. The club will actually need to address the left-back position as a matter of urgency given Taylor and Valle are out of contract this summer.

  1. I really liked Bernabei but not as a left back. I thought as a left sided attacking midfielder. I also thought the sudden rise to fame and fortune for a young guy where the ladies would be looking at him favourably was too much for him but hopefully with his partner and young baby he’ll be more settled if and when he returns.

  2. Bernabei is a much better player than most Celtic fans realise.
He is certainly worth much more than we paid for him.
He was unsettled here and not enough was done to support him in my opinion.
