Report: Celtic set to promote Steve Hammell to key coaching role

Celtic are set to promote Stevie Hammell to Head of Academy. The former Hamilton manager joined Celtic as Head of Academy Coaching in 2023.

However, a report from Record Sport indicates that Hammell will replace Chris McCart as the club’s Academy chief in a shakeup of the club’s academy. McCart has held this role for 12 years and a refresher will be needed to help produce more first team ready talents.

Hammell is highly rated and a move to make the academy more productive in terms of first team players coming through. The report details that Shaun Maloney, McCart and Hammell have been dealing with new contracts for youth players. Maloney is the club’s First Team Pathways Manager, a role that he will step back into once a permanent boss is appointed.

Celtic are hunting for a new manager after Brendan Rodgers’ sensational resignation on Monday. The Irishman tendered his resignation along with John Kennedy, Adam Sadler, Glenn Driscoll and Jack Lyons. Martin O’Neill has come into the club as interim manager with Maloney and Mark Fotheringham also coming into the dugout until a permanent team are confirmed.
