Report: English side lined up for Celtic’s opponents in Sydney Cup

The Sydney Cup organisers will soon reveal the second headliner for their mini-tournament this winter following theRangers’ decision to withdraw, according to a report. Inter Milan had been touted as potential opponents but the trail has gone cold and now, a source is reporting that an English side is being lined up.

According to our friends at 67HailHail, The Sydney Cup organisers will reveal the club’s opponents for the money-spinning tournament in Australia during the Winter Break and it is likely to be a Premier League club. The Ange Homecoming tour has attracted a lot of interest both in Scotland and in Australia.

With the World Cup taking place in November, an early winter break has been pencilled in for the Scottish clubs and the rest of Europe as the stars take their place at the tournament in Qatar. Celtic have signed up to play the friendlies in Australia. The move is said to net Celtic more money than prize money from winning the Cinch Premiership.

theRangers were scheduled to take part in the competition but due to pressures from their support, they surrendered and withdrew leaving their fans in Australia with tickets to Celtic friendlies. The fall-out from their decision to withdraw looks set to continue but they were always only ever a support act.

It will be interesting to see who are announced as the club will use the break to maintain levels ahead of the return to action.

  1. It won’t matter who it is.
One thing we do know, is who it WON’T be! It won’t be the new club in Scotland because we all know they withdrew out of pure unadulterated fear of humiliation.
So now instead, we can face a big club.
