Reported Celtic target Siriki Dembele left out Peterborough squad for Championship opener

Reported Celtic target Siriki Dembele was left out of the Peterborough squad for their Championship opener versus Luton Town. Darren Ferguson’s side were soundly beaten 3-0 but one of their star performers from last year, Dembele, was nowhere to be seen.

The 24-year-old is a reported target of Celtic and the family connection could potentially lead to him making a move to Glasgow’s East End. However, Peterborough look as if they are trying to get rid of the player this window as he has just a year remaining on his deal.

Dembele is the brother of Celtic youth prospect Karamoko Dembele and has been linked with the Scottish Champions as well as Glasgow rivals Rangers, Championship duo Bournemouth and Fulham are also believed to be keen. Celtic may move for the versatile attacking midfielder given the need for options on the left side of midfield. The player had been suffering from an Achilles knock but had been expected to return to the squad today.

With one year remaining on his deal with Posh, Dembele has been added to the transfer list. The Championship new boys will be hoping that they can recoup a fee for the player and not face losing him on a free transfer.

Dembele’s form last year earned him a place on the EFL League One Team of the Year as Peterborough earned automatic promotion to the Championship.

Dembele, who started his career with Dundee United, joined Posh in June 2018 and has scored 11 goals and notched up 12 assists for the London Road outfit last season. This impressive form has garnered the interest of a number of teams, including Celtic. Postecoglou’s new-look side could be well placed to offer Dembele the next step in his career with the chance to play for trophies as well as in Europe.

Celtic have also been linked with Kristijan Lovric of Gorica, the Croatian Internationalist would be an impressive acquisition but Dembele should be kept in reserve as a back-up.
