Rodgers to send defender out on loan, switching Belgians

BRENDAN RODGERS is delighted to welcome Emilio Izaguirre back to the club. Speaking to this week’s Celtic View the manager was full of praise for the returning left-back. And Rodgers revealed that this will now allow Calvin Miller to get some match-time while out on loan, with St Johnstone a viable option for that move.

“To sign Emilio was an opportunity that came to us late on while we were striving to get cover for Kieran Tierney and to allow young Calvin Miller to go out on loan.

“Emilio fits the bill perfectly. He knows the club, having played for the team, so it’s an easy adaption for him.

“His family are coming back and they’re happy, too. He’s ready if and when he is needed.

“He’s had a season with me, so he understands a lot of the principles of how we work. His profile and fitness all suit and it’s good to see him again.”

Tommy Wright tried to take Calvin Miller on loan in January and although Rodgers considered the proposal carefully he decided that he needed to maintain the cover for Kieran Tierney.

Now though with Izaguirre’s return, Miller will be allowed to go out and this will undoubtedly help his development.

Meanwhile Dedryck Boyata did NOT train with his Celtic teammates yesterday as his agents and Celtic officials met to discuss an exit plan. All parties are now working towards a common goal of moving the Belgian defender out of the club as soon as possible.

The Celtic Star broke the story a week or two ago that the club were pushing to sign Jason Denayer from Manchester City, which was based on solid information. The story then seemed to head in another direction entirely based on something posted online in Turkey.

Whether Denayer will want to play in Scotland again, with Celtic out of the Champions League, is probably the crucial factor.

Boyata out and him in would seem sensible though.
