Rodgers squashes unnecessary Griffiths rumour

A prominent Celtic supporter late last night tweeted about Leigh Griffiths. As if the evening wasn’t bad enough after that awful performance in Leipzig, this caused even more upset and annoyance for the Celtic support.

It will not have done Leigh Griffiths much good either and if you look in on the Hearts forums you will see that it was copied and pasted in – before it was deleted on twitter by the Celtic supporter – and the Hearts fans were able to debate the issues that they see as being implied by the tweet.

To be fair to the majority of the Hearts fans, they seem to have a healthy regard for Leigh Griffiths although are relived that he is now unlikely to feature on Sunday.

If Hearts fans noted this then so too did the media and Brendan Rodgers was asked about it at his news conference today. Here’s what the Celtic manager had to say about Leigh Griffiths’ absence from Lennxtown this week and the claim that he had not been in touch with the club.

“He has been connecting every day with our head physiotherapist Tim (Williamson) and he probably gets about 20 messages a day off him, so there’s no chance you’re not connecting with Leigh.

“We just want to get him fit and back into the squad again. He’s away for some more scans today with Tim.

“So that’s just the way it is sometimes with social media. There’s always a bit of tittle-tattle which runs and takes its own life (with) these stories. He’s very much in contact with the club.”

None of the Celtic fans sites ran with this story, which was pleasing – most if not all would have been aware of it. Even of you are given that information and even it happened to be accurate – which Brendan Rodgers has confirmed it is not, it is complete nonsense – surely you have to ask yourself if you are doing the individual concerned – a Celtic player or indeed anyone else – any favours by posting this on social media?

The fact that it is established to be rubbish within 12 hours seems to be nothing more than a massive own goal for the prominent supporter involved and he’ll no doubt get plenty of reaction as a consequence.

“It’s all social media. He hasn’t been well. He didn’t go away with the international team, then he got injured and then he has been ill for a number of days now,” Brendan had to explain.

“I spoke to Leigh when we trained at Murrayfield to check in how he was. He’s been ill so he’s been kept away from the squad.”

With Griffiths missing, Rodgers will look to record signing Odsonne Edouard to lead the line against Hearts.
