THE FOOTBALL COMMUNITY were dealt a saddening blow this weekend as it was announced that Internazionale legend Mario Corso had passed away. The Italian left winger was known as ‘God’s left foot’ and made his name with Helenio Herrera’s side.
Celtic and Inter will forever be tied together by that day in May 1967 as the Lisbon Lions won the club’s greatest triumph. Corso wore the No.11 for I Nerazzurri and collected a runners up medal, falling agonisingly (for him) short of winning a third European Cup with Inter.

That day ties the clubs, the players that played and those that remember the immortal date. Corso was tasked with the left side, with Jim Craig at right back, his opposite number.

Elsewhere, the contract offer of Jock Stein made to a man that played that day against Corso in Lisbon, Bertie Auld has surfaced.
Auld joined Celtic from Birmingham City in 1965, four years after leaving the Parkhead side. Bertie, who would later be immortalised as a member of the Lisbon Lions, was offered £800 for the 1965-66 season by Stein after signing the January before.
Stein converted Auld into a winger and it was in that position that he helped Celtic to the club’s greatest ever success in 1967.
