Scott Brown hails the Celtic support as the Road to Ten begins

SCOTT BROWN has paid tribute to the Celtic support as the club began preparations for the start of the new season yesterday. The club skipper was amongst a number of stars that were put through their paces at Lennoxtown as the Scottish Champuions have to get up to speed following a three-month layoff as a result of Coronavirus.

Speaking to the Celtic FC Official Site, Brown praised the support for everything they have given the club but has urged them to continue to support them into next season, even if it is likely that the season will begin behind closed doors.

“The fans are always behind us. They obviously want us to win and they expect us to win week-in, week-out. The season there was incredible, and with their support over the years, it’s just a shame that we couldn’t celebrate lifting that trophy with them.

“But here’s hoping they get the opportunity to come back into Celtic Park soon and we get those stands full as well. We’re going to miss them, but we still need to make sure we do our job and I’m sure they’ll be watching and supporting us on from their houses, or wherever they are.”

Supporters won’t be able to return to the grounds until Phase 4 of Nicola Sturgeon’s roadmap out of lockdown; however as Scotland looks set to enter Phase 2 next week, this could be sooner rather than first thought. Supporters that renew their season tickets will receive a virtual season ticket experience for games that they miss, although this has led to some backlash.

Celtic’s last competitive action was a 5-0 win over St Mirren at Celtic Park on March 7, over three months ago, meaning that it will take some time to get back to sharpness before the August restart. Brown, however, was just happy to be back training – even if he there is no contact initially.

“Being away has been difficult for all the lads. You obviously try and stay as fit as you possibly can, running out and about in the streets and doing what you can indoors. But it’s that football sharpness that we’re going to miss, and the contact as well.

“Hopefully we can get to that as soon as possible as well, which will help us to improve our fitness. It’s the short and sharp stuff that you miss. It was just good to get back up there, and see the sun in Lennoxtown. That was lovely.”
