Scott Brown’s departure has improved Callum McGregor, claims pundit

Callum McGregor has improved as a footballer following Scott Brown’s departure, according to Charlie Adam. The former Premier League midfielder came up against McGregor in the midfield for Dundee as Celtic ran dominated, winning 4-2. However, Adam told PLZ Soccer that he believes Brown’s departure has allowed for McGregor to improve due to the added responsibility.

“Listen, Scotty was a brilliant captain for Celtic but do you think Scott Brown has helped Callum again? To evaluate where he is in the club.

“He’s now the main guy at the club and he’s took it on board. He’s building into that captain by his performances on the pitch.

“I think there’s been a massive improvement in Callum. He’s a very good player but since Broony’s left Celtic, I think Callum’s progressed again and taken that responsibility.”

For club and country, McGregor’s performance level and leadership is pivotal. The 28-year-old has played 21 games this year, scoring once and assisting once. He has moved into a deeper role with Brown’s exit.

McGregor has already won 14 trophies at Celtic (compared with Brown’s 22 trophies). The club bid farewell to Brown in the summer after Brown decided to reunite with his former Hibernian teammate Stephen Glass at Aberdeen. The deal clearly offered him some security as it is a two-year deal that encapsulates both playing and coaching, which for the 36-year-old is highly desirable. You would not rule out seeing the player return to Celtic in a managerial capacity at some point in the next few years. However, Celtic are improving under Ange Postecoglou with McGregor at the heart of the Celtic rebuild.
