Scottish Football Could Follow Cricket Australia’s Lead By Declaring Top Team Champions

Scottish football can take the lead of Cricket Australia, who today announced that the Sheffield Shield, their premier tournament would finish prematurely. The cricket season in Australia had two games still to play but chiefs Down Under have decided to award New South Wales the title, as they sit 12 points ahead of Victoria.

As a result of being top for the majority of the year, as well as maintaining a lead at the top of the table, New South Wales were awarded the trophy. Their rivals, Victoria, accepted their fate as the abnormal situation took hold.

Scottish football chiefs are set to decide their battle plan for sorting the season whilst managing the finances of the clubs as well as their expectations. Rangers have called for ‘null and void’ despite the implications that this could bring for Scottish clubs as TV companies and stakeholders may call for refunds. Rangers are clearly more worried about conceding 9IAR to Celtic.

Whether the plan involves waiting until the Government give the all clear to resume sporting activities following COVID-19’s grip of the country or declaring the standings final, it is set to upset some parties. Hearts have already stated their intent to sue the SPFL if they decide to relegate the Jambos with eight games remaining.

Celtic supporters don’t want to be rewarded with a tweet confirming a record equalling ninth premiership title in a row, instead they want to win it on the pitch. We want to enjoy the party that a league title will bring.

So what can the SPFL do to mitigate what is an enormously difficult situation. The best scenario could be playing the games ahead of a new campaign. 4 weeks, 8 games – Saturday and Wednesday matches starting at the end of July and beginning of August, where the League Cup group stages are played. This is working on the assumption that UEFA will allow for Scottish teams to enter the Champions League/Europa League without the various hurdles of qualifying.

In what is a terrible situation for everyone as business seem set to fail, dealing with the politics of football give some sort of normality to everything.

Hopefully we will be able to get a resolution to our season sorted in the next few weeks.
