Sensational report claims Celtic to join British Premier League

Celtic are being tipped to join a new British Premier League, according to a sensational report by The Sun. Football was rocked last weekend by the news that twelve clubs across the continent would be looking to breakaway from UEFA and form a European Super League but with the news that one Premier League side wanted to walk away, the league folded like a pack of cards and now the inquiry into the reasons for the breakaway are being dissected.

The report claims that the traditional ‘Big Six’ are in favour of inviting Celtic and Rangers to partake in a new British Premier League, which would have the backing of UEFA and FIFA. The idea is to capture the global reach and fierce rivalry of Glasgow’s big two and commercialise it into the Premier League, which has become a tourist league.

The report cited one club official who was all in favour of offering Celtic and Rangers a chance to take a lucrative cut of English revenues for the game.

“Whether or not the European Super League was going to happen, we all feel the Premier League has to be changed and improved.

“It is time we opened it up to Rangers and Celtic. That would make sense for everyone.”

Celtic could enjoy enormous growth in the British Super League and be able to attract more players, managers etc. However, there would be a resignation of the Scottish game which has been thus unaffected by over-commercialisation. There is a humour and raw passion of the Scottish game that is unique and would be sorely missed if Celtic were to leave the SPFL. Whether the SPFL would sign off on any plans remains to be seen, it could be a case of doing the league for a couple of seasons and taking it from there. Ultimately, Celtic (and Rangers) cannot compete with the financial might of some of these teams but they have a fanbase which is almost unrivalled in the English game.
