Celtic’s emphatic 6-0 victory at St Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership over the weekend was the club’s biggest margin of victory this season…
However, it was still some way short of their record win, which was set against Dundee in 1895. Let’s have a look at the biggest Celtic victories of all time…
Celtic 11-0 Dundee – Scottish League Division 1 – October 1895
The league match between Celtic and Dundee in 1895 was expected to be a close encounter but injuries to several key players forced the visitors to field a weakened team. Things got worse during the game, with Dundee reduced to nine men. Celtic showed no mercy, racking up eleven goals against their beleaguered opponents.
Allan Martin, who was Celtic’s top scorer that season with 18 goals, remarkably failed to get on the scoresheet during the game.
Celtic 10-0 Hamilton Academical – League Cup – September 1968
Celtic ran riot against Hamilton in their League Cup quarter-final first leg tie at Parkhead in 1968, smashing home ten goals without reply. Bobby Lennox and Stevie Chalmers shared the goals between them as the Hoops sparkled despite the tricky weather conditions. Accies goalkeeper Billy Lamont made several fine saves during the game, which prevented Celtic from equalling or bettering their record victory.
Celtic 9-0 Kokkolan Pallo-Veikot – European Cup – September 1970
Numerous Celtic fans lined their pockets in September 1970 as Glasgow bookmakers made a serious misstep with their pre-match odds for this game. They offered odds of 8/1 against Celtic scoring three or more goals in each half and were duly punished as the Finnish champions were routed. Legendary winger Jimmy Johnstone was in fine form, treating the crowd to his dazzling array of tricks as Celtic racked up their biggest victory in Europe.
Celtic 8-1 – FK Suduva Marijampole – UEFA Cup – September 2002
Celtic were involved in another nine-goal European game in 2002, but this one was noteworthy as both sides got on the scoresheet at Parkhead. Punters who predicted this outcome in the both teams to score market were rewarded when Tomas Radzinevicius netted a late consolation goal for Suduva. More commonly referred to as BTTS by bookies, this wager paid dividends again when Celtic faced Falkirk in the CIS Insurance Cup two years later.
Celtic 8-1 Falkirk – CIS Insurance Cup – September 2004
Celtic demolished Falkirk to reach the quarter-finals of the CIS Insurance Cup in 2004, with early goals by Mohammed Sylla and Ross Wallace setting them on their way to victory. Wallace subsequently completed his hat-trick as the Hoops swept into the last eight of the competition without breaking into a sweat. Aiden McGeady crowned a superb individual performance with a cracking effort in the dying seconds which rocketed past Falkirk goalkeeper Darren Hill.
Dunfermline Athletic 1-8 Celtic – Scottish Premiership – February 2006
Maciej Zurawski grabbed four goals as Celtic cruised to an 8-1 victory over Dunfermline Athletic at East End Park in 2006. The performance came on the back of criticism from goalkeeper Artur Boruc, who ironically did not cover himself in glory when Andrew Tod scored for the home side. Celtic’s victory part of a stellar first season under the management of Gordon Strachan, with Celtic finishing 17-points clear of second placed Hearts.
Celtic 9-0 Aberdeen – Scottish Premiership – November 2010
Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper both netted hat-tricks as Celtic gave Aberdeen a lesson in finishing in a one-sided clash at Parkhead in 2010. With club legend Henrik Larsson watching from the stands, the deadly duo gave Aberdeen’s defence a torrid time throughout the contest. Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee refused to apologise for the performance after the game and it was no surprise when he was sacked just a few weeks later.
Celtic 8-1 Hamilton Academical – Scottish Premiership – January 2016
Hamilton were on the receiving end of another pounding at Parkhead in 2016 as Celtic cruised to a commanding 8-1 victory. Mikael Lustig, Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic put them 3-0 ahead inside the first ten minutes, before Leigh Griffiths got in on the act with a brace. While Griffiths completed his hat-trick after the break, he spurned several other opportunities to make the scoreline more emphatic.
Dundee United 0-9 Celtic – Scottish Premiership – August 2022
Celtic humiliated Dundee United on their own patch in 2022 to make an early statement in their bid to win another Scottish Premiership title. Superb hat-tricks from Kyogo Furuhashi and Liel Abada helped Ange Postecoglou’s side inflict United’s worst ever home defeat. Celtic subsequently claimed their 53rd Scottish league title, netting a mind-blowing 114 goals in 38 matches.
