Some recent underwhelming transfer links, surely Celtic need to think bigger

Some recent targets are underwhelming to say the least. We need quality not quantity…

After the disappointment of seeing our treble dream go down the drain after Saturday’s Scottish cup final penalty shoot-out defeat to Aberdeen we can take a moment to reflect on the season past and look ahead to next season.

Our main priority was to win the league and our biggest target was to improve in the UEFA Champions Leagues and we can certainly say that both these targets were met. Brendan missed out on the League Cup in his first season back to it was great for him to be reaquainted with the last trophy he won before leaving for Leicester City.

It took a penalty shoot-out to see off theRangers and just like Celtic had done in the Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen in 2024 it was through penalties that we proceeded to the final before beating theRangers.

So two penalty shoot out wins in 2024 both at theRangers end…when Callum won the toss and opted for the Celtic end at Hampden, well that was a concern and is it turned out to be a case of third time unlucky for the Hoops. But we can have no complaints, in the penalty shoot-out Aberdeen were much better.

It’s evident we’ve got some work to do on the transfer front after seeing us finish the game on Saturday with the likes of Johnny Kenny and Yang as our main attacking options. No disrespect to either player but we need better if we want to continue our domestic dominance and make an impact in Europe.

We’ve been linked with players such as Mathias Kvistgaarden, Lennon Miller and Michel – Ange Balikwisha all players who could step into the starting XI, but more concerningly we’ve recently been linked with lower key players such as Youssef El Kachati and Kalidou Sidibe who both play their football in the second and third tiers of French and Dutch football respectively.

Without sounding disrespectful to both players or the lower leagues in French and Dutch football we should he looking at a higher calibre of player and not ones who are seen as having ‘potential’ or squad fillers.

Brendan wants quality and he was backed big last summer. He needs to be backed in a similar way this coming window.

There will be interest in players like Nicolas Kuhn, Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate – who was badly missed at the weekend. Any decisions to sell must be backed up with securing high quality replacements and that’s on top of our initial requirements ahead of any sales.

Brendan wants to go into the season stronger than the previous year so we should be doing all we can to make that happen.

  1. “Brendan wants quality and he was backed big last summer” – £31 million wasted on Engels, Idah, Trusty, Bernardo & McCowan last summer. Celtic needs a quality manager – not one who buys weak players and forces our best young talent out of the club. Naka & Robbie Keane are both succeeding in management.

Celtic need vision – all Rodgers does is select the same old players like the roly-poly goalie that let 5 goals in against Portugal to much derision from the Danes. The tired old Souey/McConn/Liewell johnny foreigners signing policy is going nowhere. Time to ditch the Snake.

Brenden needs to sign a play maker in mid field. Celtic badly missed that quality and McGregor is being left to do far to much.
The subs that came on were awful and high lighted that the squad needs to be vastly improved.
Aberdeen got their tactics right – defence in depth – but Celtic players appeared to be happy to play pass the ball about in mid field.
In 3 or 4 games this season Celtic have not turned up such as old firn matches , St Johnstone and if repeated next season then with stiffer competion we are likely to not win the league.
This season has not been as great as what is made out and Brenden needs to bring in quality players to vastly improve our chances at home and abroad.
This is not easy as many of our recent signings have been well below average.
