After a difficult week following Celtic FC Women’s defeat to theRangers at Ibrox last Friday night, concerns are once again growing over another convenient silence from the club…

Every week so far this season, the media have been invited to attend a pre-match press conference that would take place on Thursday. It seems as though Celtic have decided that NO press conference will go ahead in the run-up to Sunday’s game against Partick Thistle, raising some questions over why that’s the case.

There are a significant number of players missing from the squad, with vague updates being given every week when asked about the status of missing members. Our best player at the moment, Morgan Cross suffered an injury against theRangers last week that forced her to make way, and now, we won’t be able to get an update on the situation due to this unusual lack of media interaction following another disappointment for Elena Sadiku against the top SWPL sides. Her record against theRangers is appalling and in shape contrast to Fran Alonso’s who always had the upper hand in the Glasgow Derby fixtures.

So why are Celtic avoiding a press conference this week? Are they afraid that a journalist is going to ask a pressing question? Is that considered not worth the risk? Possibly, but it’s probably more to do with media resources and the focus being on tomorrow’s AGM at Celtic Park which has all the hallmarks of being as confrontational as it’s ever been.
Of course, that reason makes sense but if it is the case begs the question why Celtic are not world class in having enough media staff to cope. The fans who attend the women’s games want answers to the burning questions, and now, there is no-one to ask the person in charge of team. Journalists have little to write about without the questions being put to Elena Sadiku and usually one of her players.

Earlier this week, The Celtic Star explored the problems at Celtic Women, concluding that it’s not only the manager at fault, but the board as a whole. This is even clearer now, as the disconnect sadly continues to grow.
Incidentally there’s no doubt in my mind that Elena would have been prepared to speak to the media today, even after the defeat at Ibrox. Ducking out is not her style, so we can certainly look at this as a Celtic decision, probably due to the AGM, but nothing to do with the Head Coach.
