Stephen Welsh hails ‘brilliant’ Postecoglou training

Stephen Welsh has hailed new Boss Ange Postecoglou’s training as being ‘tough’ but ‘brilliant’. The 21-year-old became a mainstay in the Celtic defence last season and will hoping that continues. Welsh has the chance to impress Postecoglou during pre-season and is throroughly enjoying working under the 55-year-old Australian.

Speaking to Celtic TV, Welsh detailed the first week as a player under the new manager, explaining what training has been like.

“It’s been brilliant, really positive and the sessions have been to a very high standard. It’s been very sharp and all football-based, which is exactly what you want as a player.

“You’re not stopping or hanging about. You’re doing one thing straight into the next, so the intensity is really good.

“The boys are working hard and trying to prove themselves so it’s been a good start to the pre-season. Pre-season training has been tough in this heat.

“It’s always going to be tough during pre-season, especially the first couple of weeks. I’ve really enjoyed it. I’m getting up to speed with everything and looking forward to the games ahead now.”

Welsh first made his debut last season in a win over Hamilton but backed up an impressive debut with solid displays this season, where defensive stability was thin on the ground. Welsh will be hoping to kick on under a new boss, proving that Lennon was right to introduce him into the starting XI. Hopefully, he will be able to kick on under the new manager but he will likely face new recruits coming to the club.

This is important for Celtic ahead of the new season, at times last year the team appeared to drop off at times. Whether this was a fitness or game management issue, the new manager will need to remedy this and tough training sessions set the bar high for the season ahead. You would think that this will ramp up when the rest of the first team, that were on international duty, arrive for the training camp in Wales.
