Surprise as David Turnbull omitted from Scotland announcement

David Turnbull has been one of Celtic’s standout players this season. In a season that has been so disappointing, Turnbull has delivered flare with his midfield performances, scoring eight and assisting six so far this season. However, Steve Clarke has omitted the youngster from his FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Austria, Israel and The Faroe Islands.

Clarke has decided to give a cap to Jack Hendry, on loan at Oostende, Callum McGregor, Ryan Christie and Greg Taylor from the Celtic cohort. It is surprising not to see Scott Bain picked, especially considering he has become No.1 with Celtic whilst McLaughlin sits on the Rangers bench.

The real surprise is Turnbull being omitted though, especially looking at some of the players that were selected instead. It was almost by chance that Turnbull made his breakthrough in the Europa League ‘dead rubber’ against Lille. Since then he has been a mainstay in the Celtic team and will likely be the core of the new manager’s team next year.
