Typical, isn’t it? Just as he has started to come back from this season’s reenactment of the mate who is picked last at five-a-side, Tom Rogic has hit his usual creative and outstanding form; only for reports to start surfacing about a potential exit from Celtic Park – with Football Insider citing his lack of game time as the reason for his exit.
The season has been unforgiving to many in the East End of Glasgow; and unfortunately, ‘Tam’ has been one of it’s many victims. He’s been in and out of the starting XI more times than he is could wish to ask for this season, and despite his excellent post-Dubai form for Neil Lennon’s men, the straw has already broken the camel’s back – leading to Rogic willing for a return back to Down Under or somewhere else in Europe.
It would shame for Rogic’s spell in the famous green and white to end like this: this is a player who has come up with vital, vital goals for the club – most notably the cup final win over Aberdeen back in 2017, the equaliser before Eddy skelped the Huns’ in their own backyard and the late winner against Motherwell in 2016 which sent us on our way to the quadruple treble.
Perhaps the most galling thing about the ordeal is the reporting claiming Celtic would want just £2million for a club to take the Aussie off their hands. Paltry? Most certainly! He has two years left on his contract, and at the age of 28 his footballing career is by no means in decline already. £2million in today’s game is nothing – nowadays, that could get you a year’s supply of Shane Duffy (yikes), a Mark McKenzie (who Celtic missed out on) and certainly not someone of Tam’s quality. But, as we know, player power is increasingly more powerful in the current era, and should our long serving Canberran want to leave Paradise, it would be hard to stand in his way.
