Team’s Up – Iheanacho and Yang start for Celtic

Brendan Rodgers has named his Celtic team for this afternoon’s Premier Sports Cup Quarter Final against Partick Thistle…

The Scottish Champions are in Maryhill as they look to continue their defence of the League Cup with a win against Mark Wilson’s Jags.

The Celtic manager has made a number of changes but it is a strong team with Celtic looking to book their place in the next round.

In goals, Vil Sinisalo starts. In defence, Colby Donovan starts at right back with Kieran Tierney at left back. Liam Scales and Cameron Carter-Vickers start in the central pairing.

In midfield, the Celtic captain Callum McGregor starts alongside Reo Hatate and Benji Nygren as Brendan Rodgers sticks by this combination despite calls for Paulo Bernardo to get some game-time.

In attack, Kelechi Iheanacho gets his first Celtic start and will play through the middle with Yang will be out on the right wing and the impressive Seb Tounekti out left.

The Celtic substitutes today are Schmeichel; Balikwisha, McCowan, Engels, Bernardo, Saracchi, Maeda, Murray and Forrest.

  1. Very, very disappointing team selection.
Kierney has been underwhelming, the whole midfield was awful last week, what happened to picking form players and dropping off form players. Why are Pusey, Inamura and Yamada not even in the squad?
I know I’m biased in that I’m but a huge fan of the manager, but how can possibly motivate fringe players, when he never plays them. Remember, we lost league to Rangers for that reason, a manager playing his favourites, despite results and poor performances.
As I say…disappointing, especially against lower level opposition.

  2. So, no rotation in midfield? Or centre back? Are we having a laugh?
There’s no way Iheanacho or Tierney will last 90, so there’s 2 subs used. No rest for Calmac again?
Hatate and Nygren pairing up again? Forcing the issue- again?

We might win the match but what would it prove. Where is Bernardo? Where is Engels? We need these guys to have minutes, and to have confidence, if we are to do well across both league and Europe.
And CCV, Calmac and Hatate need more resting.

    Argh.

  3. When Trusty and AJ eventually return from injuries, in place of Donovan and Murray, this will be our match day squad, unless injuries are to impact?

Within in that 20man squad, can see a growing number who could start joining Maeda and Yang on the want away list.
Paulo and Engels must be considering there Celtic futures at present imo?
