‘That was my best day at Celtic’, Simunovic’s recalls McNeill tribute

JOZO SIMUNOVIC has chosen the moment that he scored against Kilmarnock as his best moment in five years playing for Celtic. This, on the face of it, may not appear that monumental considering the games that he played in; however, if you recall that last April, Simunovic scored in the 67th minute as Celtic beat Kilmarnock 1-0 as the Scottish Champions paid tribute to one of the club’s greatest sons, Billy McNeill.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Simunovic selected that emotional day as his greatest moment with Celtic. Simunovic rose and headed Celtic ahead, a vital three points towards sealing the league title but there was so much more meaning as it was the club’s No.5 that scored.

“I would say that was my best day at Celtic. It was very symbolic.

“It was a special week for the club, very emotional, and everyone wanted to remember Billy.

“To wear the No5 was an honour. To score the winning goal in 67 minutes – just like the European Cup win – was amazing.

“I am proud that people will always remember that moment. For all my life, I will never forget it.

“I gave my No5 top to the McNeill family after the game and I felt that was the least I can do.

“There was so much emotion at Celtic Park that day and to give them that gift was a pleasure.”

The Croatian defender joined from Dinamo Zagreb in 2015 following Virgil Van Dijk’s departure for Southampton. However injuries curtailed his progress with the Scottish Champions and the decision has been taken to part ways with the Croatian.

The 25-year-old signed a contract extension back in 2017 for four-years and it was expected that the club would exercise the option of the fourth year after his impressive domestic displays; however, it was decided that Jozo would leave the club as the club look to redistribute the wages spent on him for new imports.
