The Celtic family’s Tributes to Tommy Gemmell, born on this day in 1943

THE CELTIC family are thinking about one of our favourite sons, Tommy Gemmell today. Tommy was born on this day in 1943. He was a friend of mine. I got to know Tommy really well in the latter part of his life and he was always at his best when the conversation turned to Celtic.

His favourite one liner was always ‘Which one?’ when he was invariably asked about his European Cup Final goal, “I scored in two finals,” he would say with a glint on his eye and a cheeky smile on his face. He was never arrogant – quite the opposite in fact – and he loved talking about Celtic, just as he had loved playing for Celtic. He always did both with such style and commitment to the cause.
